Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGPM)
About the Programme
Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGPM), earlier known as Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM), is a eleven month, full-time, residential programme. The mission of the programme is to create and nurture value-based future leaders taking on higher management roles in transforming organizations.

SPJIMR perceived the need of the industry for thought leaders in middle level management and successfully endeavored to create the PGPM course. The programme which is in its fourth year, has challenged the paradigm of conventional part time courses for working executives. Participants gain management perspectives through an innovative pedagogy of experiential learning and enhanced peer interaction. The programme offers a platform for learning and exchange of ideas with expert faculty. The renowned faculty at the institute facilitates innovative thinking through practical academic inputs and thought-provoking case studies. The programme also has a strong focus on values and ethics.

The unique aspect of the programme is the focus on the specific Role and Domain that the participant is interested to pursue. The customized approach ensures

A) Contextually specific role and domain focus
B) Functionally integrated teaching-learning process

Positioning and Philosophy
The course caters to specific industry requirements as it combines domain focused expertise with a general management perspective.

The programme has a unique model of combining the one month internship with a comprehensive research paper which gives the participant a holistic approach towards contemporary business environment.

Industry Need
The rapid growth of business has thrown open the need for a very large number of middle level and senior level management professionals in most companies. They are required to have a general management perspective with focused domain expertise on the businesses they serve. The current demand for such professionals is expected to far exceed the availability. Internal promotions within the organization alone will not be sufficient to feed this demand.

Participant Need
The PGPM programme is best suited for working professionals to add value to their careers in a short time.

The Family Managed Business(FMB)

About the Programme
SPJIMR pioneered the Family Managed Business Programme for young family business managers, which is now in its 12th Year.

The Family Managed Business (FMB) programme has a custom designed architecture reflecting the central theme of preparing the participant for leadership of his/her family business. The architecture adopted focuses on the objectives and pedagogy for fulfilling the theme

Family Businesses make numerous and critical contributions to the economy both in terms of money income and such intangibles as time, flexibility, control and personal expertise. Family businesses add the realities of family life to traditional business ethos, expanding the range of issues, personalities, needs and potential solutions for each decision. Knowing something about family types, communication patterns, managerial styles and the amount of support members can expect from their families, may be as important to entrepreneurs as knowing how to reach a market or managing cash flows.

The SPJIMR Family Managed Business Programme was evolved to assist family-owned firms in meeting the unique managerial challenges associated with operating and sustaining a successful family enterprise. The programme helps the students to identify which family dynamics most often affect business decisions, and learn how to overcome these hurdles to continued growth and profitability.

This program is offered by the Centre for Family Businesses in India at SPJIMR, which is committed in its mission to:

    * Further the understanding, growth and development of responsible family-owned business.
    * Celebrate the importance of family enterprises in our economy and our society.
    * To prepare next generation family business leaders for their unique leadership roles.
    * To increase the survival rate of mature family-owned businesses by focusing on opportunities inherent in these enterprises

The connection between entrepreneurship and family business appears to be widely recognized. An entrepreneur is often defined as someone who specializes in making judgmental decisions about the coordination of scarce resources, is institution-free, deals with the factors of risk, and has influence over the flow of information, Although the literature often portrays the entrepreneur as a single individual, family business literature strongly suggests that families are vital and supportive environments for entrepreneurial behavior. Put simply, entrepreneurship is the start and heart of most family managed businesses, and the phenomenon of an entrepreneurial family fosters, subsidises and enhances the efforts of its members who engage in entrepreneurship. "Family business" is a wider-lens view of entrepreneurship, as the initial business effort of one or more family members grows and changes over time.

Duration
The duration of the FMB Programme is 2 years including the foreign visit. The participants spend one week each month at the Centre in learning and the remaining three weeks at their work place, applying the acquired concepts and skills in their business. They also work on specific assignments, reporting to the faculty through e-mail.

Similarly, the duration of the Owner Manager Programme is twelve months.

Eligibility
The FMB Programme is open to graduate family members with a significant stake in the family business. Sponsorship by the business is essential. Selection is through assessment of the application followed by a test and personal interview.

Executive Management Programme

About the Programme

The emerging Business challenges require corporates to create a reservoir of versatile executives with a strong base of functional knowledge along with general management perspective.

SPJIMR's uniquely architectured Executive Management Programme is designed with a potential to address the above shortcomings and fills the gap of providing high quality management education to Practicing executives with minimal absence from their workplace.

SPJIMR's approach to major initiatives has been to formulate details based on definite and distinctive foundational premises. For the Executive Management Programme, these are:

   1. The conventional classroom mode of learning can be leveraged significantly through non-classroom activities- a belief borne out of successful practice of pedagogic approaches at SPJIMR with other programs.
   2. Professional education can be best acquired by a two-stage process of:
         1. acquisition of knowledge of theoretical concepts followed by
         2. application of the concepts to real life situations
   3. Formal management education needs to sensitise participants to appreciate that:
         1. the onus of learning in the ultimate analysis is mainly on the learner
         2. the process of learning needs to be continuous throughout the career and
         3. the sources and methods of learning are varied
   4. Sponsoring companies need to have somewhat of a direct role in assisting the learning experience of the participant- positive gains being:
(i)wider spread of knowledge within the organisation
(ii) performance improvement resulting from Executive Management Programme action learning, Application exercises and Projects.
   5. Effective management education for practicing executives needs to be contextual and hence needs to be customised vis-a-vis the organisation and the participant's specific role.

Duration
The programme is spread over 4 phases over a 21-month duration and would involve 60 full days of classes at our campus in Mumbai. The on-campus period is divided into contact periods as under:

   1. Initial contact period of 3 days for the Orientation phase
   2. 6 contact periods each of 9 days duration over the Foundation, Integration and Customisation phases;
   3. Culminating contact period of 3 days for final exams and project presentation.

During the Contact days, participants will put in about 10 to 12 hours of study time. The intervening period of about 10 weeks between two Contact periods would be spent in consolidating the class learning's, submitting assignments ( about 4 to 5 per week) and preparing for the next contact period.

Eligibility
Graduates with minimum 5 years experience and with a good track record and who are backed up/supported by their companies to do the program.

The SPJIMR Advantage
SPJIMR is not affiliated to any university and is completely autonomous. This status has given the institute the ability to utilize academic freedom to develop trend-setting educational programmes and pedagogic processes with long-term benefits for all stakeholders. SPJIMR also has entrepreneurial agility that has made it the only self-financed institute to be among the top ten in the country.

The guiding philosophy of SPJIMR is influencing practice, here and now and promoting value based growth. The Institute has an enviable track record of recognizing the needs of the society and quickly and aptly responding by offering high quality relevant programmes. And, to cap it all, SPJIMR has the locational advantage of being in Mumbai, the commercial capital of the country.

It is the first PGPM programme of the country that has been accredited by a global accreditation body, namely, AMBA (Association of MBAs) UK. MDI prides itself for the learning experience imparted in this programme.

Objectives

PGPM at MDI nurtures students to help them:

    * To understand the social, economic, political, technological and ecological environment of modern society become effective leaders, who have the potential to transform organizations.
    * To hone lateral thinking and inculcate entrepreneurial skill value integrity, justice and fairness so as to promote and maintain high ethical standards develop a global mindset so that they are better able to address the challenges of global competition.
    * And to develop an all round personality that is well integrated with the very best of the Indian values and civilizations across the world.

The Curriculum Design

The PGPM curriculum design and pedagogy emphasizes the development of students' skills and abilities to apply management theories and concepts to live problems in business and industry. Students are expected to achieve high standards of excellence. Teaching methods include - lectures, case studies, seminars, group discussions, business games, outbound based experiential learning activities, educational excursion, role plays, simulation exercises, structured and unstructured group work, and field visits. The emphasis is on involving the students in learning and helping them to relate concepts and theories to business requirements. Consistent with advances in teaching technology, the programme integrates the use of computers in learning the basic principles in different functional areas of management. It also enables students to acquire skills in identifying and dealing with complex problems in management, especially in this era of globalization of industrial and commercial activity and the resulting intense competition. The students also undertake several field-based projects so that they can get better insights into the workplace reality. The curriculum is revised on an ongoing basis through discussions with practicing managers from the industry to reflect current business needs.

Programme Structure

Core Courses

The PGPM course curriculum is spread over six terms of about three months each. The core courses are covered in four terms, with the bulk of it covered in the first three terms. These core courses enhance the ability to communicate, analyze situations and take decisions using quantitative and qualitative factors, and to develop a holistic view of the different functional areas and the business environment. During this period, students take courses in general management and major functional areas, such as finance and accounting, marketing, operations management, information technology management, organization behaviour, human resources and strategic management. They are also exposed to the basic disciplines of economics, behavioral sciences, information technology, quantitative methods and decision sciences.

Summer Internship

At the end of the first three terms, the students go for an industry internship or summer training with an organization. The internship usually spans over an eight to ten-week period. This is a compulsory component of the curriculum for the completion of the academic programme. It is designed to provide exposure to organizational working, to develop an understanding of business realities, and to learn to apply theory to real life business situations. Since the summer internship is a vital component in the promotion of the student into the second year, they are also graded for this

Specializations

In the second year, the students take elective / optional courses to specialize in a maximum of two functional areas. These areas are: Finance, Information Management, Marketing, Strategy and Operations Management. To specialize in an area a student must take a minimum of five elective course credits offered by that area. All elective packages, however, may not be offered, as this would be determined by the number(s) of students showing interest in specializing in different areas. The Institute may also consider new electives in line with recent developments and availability of expertise to offer the same.

Student Exchange Programme

Student exchange programmes promote a greater understanding of the multiple perspectives on managerial issues and challenges that are international in nature and enhances the competencies of students so that they are better able to live and work in an increasingly inter¬dependent world. These programmes thus provide a unique opportunity to the students to enrich their international academic experience and widen their career horizons. MDI has student exchange arrangements with Universities and Business Schools across the world. Students with an academic and / or professional interest in North America, Europe, Asia, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and wanting to understand the global context of business can apply for these programmes. Students can apply to educational institutes with whom MDI has student exchange tie-up. Depending upon the nature of tie-ups, a student can spend from a term to one year in these foreign institutions in lieu of his/her study term(s) at MDI. There are agreements with ESCP-EAP, Paris, EDHEC Business School, IAE Aix-en-Provance France and HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management, Leipzig Germany for dual degree programme. (For detailed information see International Exchange Programme' section in main brochure). Details for selection and opportunities are available to students when they join MDI. Selection of students is made by MDI.

Evaluation

The evaluation system for the PGPM has been designed to achieve the following:

    * Help teaching faculty to evaluate the progress of learning of each student.
    * Prescribe and promote certain acceptable and uniform standards of comprehension.
    * Encourage a healthy and constructive competition among the students.

MDI follows a system of continuous evaluation. Throughout the term, the student will be tested on his / her ability to understand concepts, learn techniques and apply them to problems in the real world. At each stage of the course, the student would be in a position to assess his / her performance and take measures to make improvement. In each course, a student is thus awarded a letter grade only. The weighted average for all courses taken by a student in the programme is called the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).

Post Graduate Programme - Human Resource Management

Fierce competition and the need for continuous change has created a critical role for HR professionals in business organizations. MDI in collaboration with National HRD Network offers PGP-HR, a unique programme to develop HR professionals with well-rounded business perspective.

Objectives

    * Global sensitivity and mindset.
    * Holistic business perspective
    * Capability to manage uncertainty and complexity
    * Capability to lead change
    * Capability to create wealth, and
    * Capability to manage diversity.

The PGP-HR prepares candidates for HR careers in industry and services. It develops capabilities in all the three domains - knowledge, attitude and competencies. The programme is designed to:

    * Prepare well-rounded business managers rather than HR managers alone.Students are given a holistic grounding in management with heavy accent on HR.
    * Emphasis on action and performance, rather than concept and input focus alone..
    * Give appreciation of business realities, demands and challenges and their role in this scheme, through in-company internships.
    * Provide appreciation of cross-cultural issues through exposure to international students as well as interaction with corporate executives with trans-continental experience.
    * To develop change management competencies.

Through a mentoring process (attachment with corporate role models/the Industry Acharya's/Gurus), the students are shaped to 'hit the ground running' when they take on their first job.

Programme Structure

The programme will be spread over six terms, each of three months. Thirty nine credit courses will be offered during this period. The first four terms will be devoted to core courses encompassing various managerial functions, essential for HR managers to develop into future business partners. The balance terms will focus on inputs in HR and OB with a mix of core courses and electives. Students have the advantage of interacting with distinguished industry mentors, their Industry Acharya s/Gurus who along with internal faculty mentors will sculpt their leadership competencies, groom and guide them.

Teaching Methodology

Teaching methodology would be 'learning centric' and not teaching centric' . It would be interactive and participative involving role modeling and fieldwork, case studies, business games, role-plays, simulation exercises, group discussions and structured and unstructured group work. Eminent professionals from HRD Network will interact with the students besides the faculty from MDI.

Evaluation

The evaluation system in the PGP-HR has been designed to foster healthy competition among the students. Throughout the term, students will be tested on their ability to understand concepts, acquire techniques and apply them to real problems in an organization. The evaluation will be done by the faculty on an on-going basis involving a minimum of four components. There will be provision for midterm and end-term examination in each course. In each course students will be awarded a letter grade. The weighted average for all the courses taken by a student in the entire programme would constitute his/her Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).

Post Graduate programme in International Management

The emerging business scenario makes global and inter cultural working an imminent reality. There is a dire need for managers and future leaders with a global mindset - managers who can appreciate different cultures, who can build networks across geographies, and live and work across cultures.

MDI Gurgaon in 2006 launched a unique, first of its kind programme in India - the Post Graduate Programme in International Management (PGP-IM). This is one of the efforts made by MDI to develop managers with appropriate mindset and ability to work in global markets. The programme was launched in collaboration with European School of Management (ESCP-EAP), France. The unique dual degree programme is delivered partly in India (MDI) and partly in Europe (ESCP-EAP campuses). The first phase of the programme is delivered on MDI Campus, at Gurgaon. The second phase of the programme is delivered in Europe at the London, Paris & Turin campuses (English Track).

In Europe, students will not only get classroom learning opportunity, they will also get an opportunity to work there or in India on a paid internship basis. In addition, there will be scope to get placement in Europe. Living and working in Europe will enable students to understand and appreciate other cultures, hone their capabilities to work across cultures and develop global mindsets.

Objectives

The key objectives of the programme are to groom global leaders with:-

    * Competencies to work across cultures.
    * Ability to work in unfamiliar markets.
    * Strong general management orientation.
    * Adequate grounding in various management functions.

Pedagogy

There will be classroom teaching through case studies, simulations and role play. Direct exposure to workplace realities will be provided through consultancy assignments and internships in the corporate sector. An integrated batch of ESCP-EAP students and MDI students will go through the entire programme. Close interactions of this kind will develop understanding, appreciation and tolerance of differences across cultures and develop the skills to work globally.

Programme Structure

The programme is spread over six modules. The first three modules spread over 8 months would be delivered at MDI. The fourth module of 6 months duration would be held at ESCP-EAP Campus. Fifth module will constitute 4 to 6 months of internship in India/ Europe while the sixth module of 1 V2 months would consist of dissertation work. Module 1 and 2 focus on providing basic inputs in qualitative and quantitative domains and provide analytical as well as communication skills. In the 3rd and 4th modules the focus shifts to giving an International Management perspective to the students. The 5th and 6th modules are dedicated to providing in-company exposure in a global context.

ESCP-EAP (European School of Management) is Europe's top school, highly ranked (number 2) by the Financial Times. The school has five campuses in Paris, London, Madrid, Berlin and Torino. Cultural and social learning is actively encouraged, and this is possible with the rich variety of activities naturally on offer in a capital cf"

About ESCP-EAP 5 campuses in Europe

There really is something for everyone; be it exploring the historical sites of the Bastille, Buckingham Palace, the Plaza Mayor or the Brandenburg Gate, or discovering the endless shows, theatres, operas, festivals and impressive markets. Each city is the political, cultural, economic or financial capital of their native country. However, each campus offers its own unique characteristics, which enables MEB applicants to suit their individual preferences.

PARIS

The Paris campus is conveniently located in the centre of the city. It is the largest of the five campuses and hosts the greatest number of faculty and students. With extensive campus facilities and over 50 active students clubs and associations, a strong sense of school spirit and community prevails.

LONDON

In 2004 the campus in the UK moved to Hampstead, North-West London. With huge refurbishments undertaken, the new UK campus is able to offer students state-of-the art facilities, whilst being situated in a traditional Victorian building. The attractive lights of the city and the business community are only a tube rides away, whilst the fashionable area of Hampstead offers a broad cultural experience away from the hustle and bustle of inner city life..

BERLIN

The ESCP-EAP Berlin campus is located near one of the historical centre-pieces of Berlin.
MADRID

Located in a residential suburb, the Madrid site is an ideal place for students to concentrate their efforts in bringing out with success such a demanding programme as the MEB. The environment of gardens and parks sets a scene oriented to hard work and personal reflection necessary for the development of managerial competencies. The close personal attention of the staff in Madrid provides an open and friendly environment for the best results in the program. Being located near the University quarter and close to the centre of Madrid also provides access to a student environment and all the necessary services.

TORNIO

The ESCP-EAP Italian campus is located in Torino in a beautiful building with state-of-the-art facilities.
Birla Institute of Technology

Birla Institute of Technology Mesra, (popularly known as BIT, Mesra or BIT, Ranchi) is an autonomous engineering institute located in Ranchi, Jharkhand in India. It is a deemed university under Sec. 3 of the UGC act 1986. In addition to Ranchi, BIT has overseas extension centres in Bahrain, Muscat (Oman), Ras al-Khaimah (UAE) & Mauritius and indian extension centres in Lalpur, Allahabad, Kolkata, Noida, Jaipur, Chennai, Patna and Deoghar.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering started functioning in the year 1983 with a sanctioned strength of thirty students for its undergraduate program (BE Computer Science). Now the department is recognized as one of the leading departments in the Eastern region of our country with infrastructure and facilities to match the very best in the country.

The department remains committed towards its goal of producing not only industry ready professionals , but also to provide the right ambience and infrastructure for those interested in pursuing their interest in Computers and related fields.

The department has a chequered past ;in the first phase the computer laboratory was equipped with the only a PDP mini computer – 11/37 (Digital Electronics Ltd.) with eight terminals. The above machines worked under the notable operating system i.e. RSX – 11M supporting programming languages like FORTRAN – IV, FORTRAN 77,ANSI COBOL, PASCAL and BASIC. Its worth mentioning that just after the installation of the above machine people not only form this Institute but also from the nearby well established industries like MECON, R & D SAIL, CMPDIL benefited tremendously using this machine to complete their outstanding projects and activities.

In the second phase soon after, the laboratory was expanded with another mini system, namely VAX 5100(DEC Ltd.) supporting 32 terminals and ULTRIX as the operating system. In 1984 the department introduced another program namely Master of Computer Applications (MCA) with a sanctioned strength of 30 students with the approval of the Department of Electronics, Govt. of India during the year 1984-85. At the same time the laboratories was enriched with the introduction of more advanced softwares like C, C++ and the RDBMS Ingress. Subsequently, some more advanced systems namely Macro VAX II (DEC Ltd.) and the mainframe server TATA UNISYS U-6000 with 45 terminals (VT 100 & GR 88) along with the operating system AT & T Unix supporting the RDBMS Oracle were installed in the 1991.

In the year 1999, the Ministry of HRD in collaboration with CDAC, gifted the Department a super computer PARAM 10000, as an acknowledgment of the Department’s untiring quest for excellence. The supercomputer holds a place of pride in the department’s impressive hardware set-up, lending its support to numerous departmental and inter departmental research activities. This was followed by a massive up gradation of the departmental infrastructure in an effort to keep pace with the rapidly changing needs of the industry. New laboratories (for Networking, Multimedia, Simulation etc.) were set up, cutting edge technology, hardware and software were acquired and the department made forays into the field of applied research, and major socio-economic projects like “Content Development for IT Localization (COIL Net)” and “Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI)”.
