A 4-year Undergraduate Course in Civil & Municipal Engg. was first introduced in 1949 in the erstwhile Engineering College. The formal sanction of the Visitor of the University to create this Dept. was received in 1956 and the B.Sc Engg. (Civil & Municipal) Degree was recognized by the Govt. of India in 1958. The name of the Dept. was changed to the present form in 1975. Postgraduate courses in Environmental Engg., Geotechnical Engg., Hydraulic Engg., Structural Engg., and Transportation Engg. were subsequently introduced.

Apart from regular teaching and research activities, the Dept. has been handling sponsored research programmes of CSIR, UGC, SAP,HUDCO, DST & AICTE. It has established liaison with industry to take various problems referred to by Govt., Semi-Govt.& Private Organizations. It also provides technical guidelines to the people of the country, particularly in the eastern region and organizes short-term courses, training courses, seminars, workshops, and conferences for the benefits of students and entrepreneurs. The Dept. has Civil Engineering Society that organizes expert lectures, group discussions, competitions, sports and other activities for the all-round development of the Civil Engineering students.

The programmes leading to M. Tech. and Ph. Chemical Engineering, BHU, Varanasi

The Department of Industrial Chemistry was started in the erstwhile Science College in the year 1921. Till 1928, only one year diploma course in Industrial Chemistry was offered. In 1928, a two - year course leading to B. Sc.( Industrial Chemistry) degree was also introduced. Later, in 1935 a two year post graduate course leading to M. Sc. (Industrial Chemistry) was also started. The year also saw the transfer of the Department of Industrial Chemistry from the College of Science to the College of Technology. Keeping in view the rapid growth of the chemical process industry and the changing engineering concepts, the Department of Industrial Chemistry was merged with the newly created Department of Chemical Engineering and Technology in the year 1949. In the same year, a four year course after Intermediate Science, leading to B. Sc. (Chemical Engineering) degree was started. The Department also introduced M. Sc. (Chemical Engineering) and Ph. D. (Chemical Engineering) programmes. It is now one of the 13 constituent departments of the Institute of Technology of the University offering 4 year B. Tech. (Chemical Engineering), two year M. Tech. (Chemical Engineering) and Ph. D. (Chemical Engineering) degrees. The Department has so far produced over 2,100 B. Tech., 190 M. Tech. and 82 Ph. D. degree holders.

Currently department has started collaborative programmes for joint research and exchange of man power with National Chemical Engineering School of Clermont- Ferrand, France for exchange of students and faculty for training , memorandum of cooperation with the Gas Authority of India Limited, New Delhi to jointly carry out research and development on areas of mutual interest , memorandum of cooperation with Alkem Industries, Mumbai for joint research and development and memorandum of cooperation with ISRO for joint research in the area of environmental monitoring.

The Electrical Engineering Department is currently the largest multidisciplinary department at IIT Kanpur. It covers practically all sub-disciplines under Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communications. The Department offers B.Tech., M.Tech. and Ph.D. Programs in Electrical Engineering. It also conducts a two semesters specialized PG Diploma Program (DIIT) in Video Communication Systems for Doordarshan Engineers. The Department is well supported in infrastructure and research resources through the Institute as well as through various sponsoring agencies and some industry. Faculty are encouraged to take independent initiatives with collective responsibility in all the relevant academic and R&D dimensions - teaching, curriculum development, graduate research supervision, R&D, continuing education or organisation of conferences, symposia, etc. They have ample freedom to associate as members of team with other faculty, research engineers or with faculty in interdisciplinary areas. The PG students strength is being steadily enhanced to enable more opportunities for research. The Department has an open atmosphere with ample scope for faculty to work with other departments and centres within the Institute. The Department conducts sponsored PG programmes for Defence, DRDO, Doordarshan and a select few others. It is getting increasing number of sponsorships from industry for attractive PG scholarships. In some areas, R&D cells from industry (for example one from Secure Meters Ltd. for development of Distribution Automation products) provide direct opportunities for advisory or consultancy for faculty. Faculty are encouraged to participate or bring in University Relations Programs (URP) from leading industry or organisations. Currently URP are available with Motorola, Texas Instruments, Silicon Automation Systems, Comdev Phase Group and Analog Devices. Students have ample freedom to choose their major sub-disciplines and broaden their base through their choice of elective courses. Several sponsored projects in several of the subject areas with large interdisciplinary content are handled through the Advanced Centre for Electronic Systems (ACES). All Projects Staff - Research Engineers, Associates and Scientific Officers come under the cooperative umbrella of ACES. ACES encourages better awareness and cooperation across the different Projects and the Department.

The Department is constantly modernizing the infrastructure and lab facilities and is well supported in infrastructure and resources through the Institute as well as through Industry.

The Department has a faculty strength of 35, who encompass all the sub-disciplines of Electrical Engineering and are active in research in all the areas. They also collaborate with the faculty from other disciplines within and outside the institute. The research activity involves active participation from the students, faculty and the research engineers.

Admission:

For PhD Program, admission is made throughout the year. Admission is also encouraged in PhD program for external registration to the personnel of R&D establishments which are equipped with necessary laboratory, library and computational facilities.

Admission to M. Tech program is made once a year in July. Candidates with B.E./B.Tech. in Aerospace/Aeronautical, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Naval Arichitecture, Electrical, Electronics/Electronics and communication, Automobile, Metallurgy/Metallurgy & Material Science with valid GATE score can apply for M.Tech. program.

Admission for Sponsored Candidates from industries as well as research organisations is also available in both programs.

Post graduate Program in Aerospace Engineering

The M.Tech. program is designed to acquaint the student with the various aspects of Aerospace engineering through several courses, both introductory and in the specialized area followed by research, leading to a thesis on a topic in the area. A student in the M.Tech. program is required to complete at a satisfactory level, a minimum of 8 courses and 32 units (two semester load) of research leading to a thesis.

In the first and second semester, a student in the M.Tech. program will be registered for 8 courses (4 courses in each semester). Towards the end of the second semester he will be assigned to a field of specialization on the basis of his aptitude, background, and availability of the faculty. A thesis supervisor will also be assigned about the same time. In the third and fourth semester he will continue research work towards completion of his thesis.

The Ph.D. program is aimed at helping the student acquire proficiency in the chosen area through course work, followed by doctoral research. A Ph.D. student is required to complete a minimum of 4 courses and 32 units (two semester load) of research subject to a minimum total academic load of 4 semesters. He is also required to pass the Ph.D. comprehensive examination held on completion of his course work.

A student in the Ph.D. program will register for four elective courses, as advised by DPGC member belonging to his area of specialization, if thesis supervisor has not been decided at the time of registration. In other cases, he may register for thesis on the advice of supervisor. In the subsequent semester he registers for research and courses as advised by his supervisor. At the end of the course work the student will appear for the Ph.D. comprehensive examination, and continue his research towards completion of his Doctoral Thesis.

Aerospace Engineering, IIT Kanpur

A premier teaching and research centre today, engaged in engineering science instruction, in-flight laboratory work, aerodynamic testing, and indigenous design and fabrication of advanced facilities and instruments. This department was inaugurated in 1964. The department specializes in aerodynamics, flight mechanics, propulsion, and aerospace structures. It has a unique flight laboratory with four powered aircrafts, four gliders and a 1000 m runway. All other academic institutions in the country make use of this facility. "Family business" is a wider-lens view of entrepreneurship, as the initial business effort of one or more family members grows and changes over time.

Duration
The duration of the FMB Programme is 2 years including the foreign visit. The participants spend one week each month at the Centre in learning and the remaining three weeks at their work place, applying the acquired concepts and skills in their business. They also work on specific assignments, reporting to the faculty through e-mail.

Similarly, the duration of the Owner Manager Programme is twelve months.

Eligibility
The FMB Programme is open to graduate family members with a significant stake in the family business. Sponsorship by the business is essential. Selection is through assessment of the application followed by a test and personal interview.

About the Programme

The emerging Business challenges require corporates to create a reservoir of versatile executives with a strong base of functional knowledge along with general management perspective.

SPJIMR's uniquely architectured Executive Management Programme is designed with a potential to address the above shortcomings and fills the gap of providing high quality management education to Practicing executives with minimal absence from their workplace.

SPJIMR's approach to major initiatives has been to formulate details based on definite and distinctive foundational premises. For the Executive Management Programme, these are:

   1. The conventional classroom mode of learning can be leveraged significantly through non-classroom activities- a belief borne out of successful practice of pedagogic approaches at SPJIMR with other programs.
   2. Professional education can be best acquired by a two-stage process of:
         1. acquisition of knowledge of theoretical concepts followed by
         2. application of the concepts to real life situations

Duration
The programme is spread over 4 phases over a 21-month duration and would involve 60 full days of classes at our campus in Mumbai. The on-campus period is divided into contact periods as under:

   1. Initial contact period of 3 days for the Orientation phase
   2. 6 contact periods each of 9 days duration over the Foundation, Integration and Customisation phases;
   3. Culminating contact period of 3 days for final exams and project presentation.

During the Contact days, participants will put in about 10 to 12 hours of study time. The intervening period of about 10 weeks between two Contact periods would be spent in consolidating the class learning's, submitting assignments ( about 4 to 5 per week) and preparing for the next contact period.

Eligibility
Graduates with minimum 5 years experience and with a good track record and who are backed up/supported by their companies to do the program.

The Post Graduate Programme in Management
PGPM is the flagship programme of MDI. It is one of the most coveted programmes at MDI and ranks amongst the very best across the top B-Schools in India. It is the first PGPM programme of the country that has been accredited by a global accreditation body, namely, AMBA (Association of MBAs) UK. MDI prides itself for the learning experience imparted in this programme.

Objectives

PGPM at MDI nurtures students to help them:

The Curriculum Design

The PGPM curriculum design and pedagogy emphasizes the development of students' skills and abilities to apply management theories and concepts to live problems in business and industry. Students are expected to achieve high standards of excellence. Teaching methods include - lectures, case studies, seminars, group discussions, business games, outbound based experiential learning activities, educational excursion, role plays, simulation exercises, structured and unstructured group work, and field visits. The emphasis is on involving the students in learning and helping them to relate concepts and theories to business requirements. Consistent with advances in teaching technology, the programme integrates the use of computers in learning the basic principles in different functional areas of management. It also enables students to acquire skills in identifying and dealing with complex problems in management, especially in this era of globalization of industrial and commercial activity and the resulting intense competition. The students also undertake several field-based projects so that they can get better insights into the workplace reality. The curriculum is revised on an ongoing basis through discussions with practicing managers from the industry to reflect current business needs.

Programme Structure

Core Courses

The PGPM course curriculum is spread over six terms of about three months each. The core courses are covered in four terms, with the bulk of it covered in the first three terms. These core courses enhance the ability to communicate, analyze situations and take decisions using quantitative and qualitative factors, and to develop a holistic view of the different functional areas and the business environment. During this period, students take courses in general management and major functional areas, such as finance and accounting, marketing, operations management, information technology management, organization behaviour, human resources and strategic management. They are also exposed to the basic disciplines of economics, behavioral sciences, information technology, quantitative methods and decision sciences.

Summer Internship

At the end of the first three terms, the students go for an industry internship or summer training with an organization. The internship usually spans over an eight to ten-week period. This is a compulsory component of the curriculum for the completion of the academic programme. It is designed to provide exposure to organizational working, to develop an understanding of business realities, and to learn to apply theory to real life business situations. Since the summer internship is a vital component in the promotion of the student into the second year, they are also graded for this

Specializations

In the second year, the students take elective / optional courses to specialize in a maximum of two functional areas. These areas are: Finance, Information Management, Marketing, Strategy and Operations Management. To specialize in an area a student must take a minimum of five elective course credits offered by that area. All elective packages, however, may not be offered, as this would be determined by the number(s) of students showing interest in specializing in different areas. The Institute may also consider new electives in line with recent developments and availability of expertise to offer the same.

Student Exchange Programme

Student exchange programmes promote a greater understanding of the multiple perspectives on managerial issues and challenges that are international in nature and enhances the competencies of students so that they are better able to live and work in an increasingly inter¬dependent world. These programmes thus provide a unique opportunity to the students to enrich their international academic experience and widen their career horizons. MDI has student exchange arrangements with Universities and Business Schools across the world. Students with an academic and / or professional interest in North America, Europe, Asia, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and wanting to understand the global context of business can apply for these programmes. Students can apply to educational institutes with whom MDI has student exchange tie-up. Depending upon the nature of tie-ups, a student can spend from a term to one year in these foreign institutions in lieu of his/her study term(s) at MDI. There are agreements with ESCP-EAP, Paris, EDHEC Business School, IAE Aix-en-Provance France and HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management, Leipzig Germany for dual degree programme. Evaluation

The evaluation system for the PGPM has been designed to achieve the following:

    * Help teaching faculty to evaluate the progress of learning of each student.
    * Prescribe and promote certain acceptable and uniform standards of comprehension.
    * Encourage a healthy and constructive competition among the students.

MDI follows a system of continuous evaluation. Throughout the term, the student will be tested on his / her ability to understand concepts, learn techniques and apply them to problems in the real world. At each stage of the course, the student would be in a position to assess his / her performance and take measures to make improvement. In each course, a student is thus awarded a letter grade only. The weighted average for all courses taken by a student in the programme is called the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).

MDI Scholarships

    * There are five merit scholarships of Rs.10, 000/- each available for the top five students at the end of the second year.
    * In addition to this, from the year 2006, Bharti Foundation Scholarship is also awarded on the basis of merit.
    * MDI students are also eligible to apply for O.P. Jindal Scholarship.

International Scholarships

The following international scholarships are available for MDI students going abroad on exchange programme to our partner Universities/ Business Schools: :

France: Eiffel Scholarships are available for students going for dual degree programme.

The PGP-HR prepares candidates for HR careers in industry and services. It develops capabilities in all the three domains - knowledge, attitude and competencies. The programme is designed to:

    * Emphasis on action and performance, rather than concept and input focus alone..
    * Give appreciation of business realities, demands and challenges and their role in this scheme, through in-company internships.

Programme Structure

The programme will be spread over six terms, each of three months. Thirty nine credit courses will be offered during this period. The first four terms will be devoted to core courses encompassing various managerial functions, essential for HR managers to develop into future business partners. The balance terms will focus on inputs in HR and OB with a mix of core courses and electives. Evaluation

National HRD Network is an association of professionals committed to promoting the HRD movement in the country. It is a non profit-making organization, registered under Registration of Society Act 1860 and Bombay Public Trust Act 1 950, which is dedicated to develop human resources through education, training, research, and experience sharing. The underlying philosophy of the Network is that every human being has the potential to do remarkable things.

The major objectives of HRD Network are:-

Post Graduate programme in International Management

The emerging business scenario makes global and inter cultural working an imminent reality. There is a dire need for managers and future leaders with a global mindset - managers who can appreciate different cultures, who can build networks across geographies, and live and work across cultures.

MDI Gurgaon in 2006 launched a unique, first of its kind programme in India - the Post Graduate Programme in International Management (PGP-IM). This is one of the efforts made by MDI to develop managers with appropriate mindset and ability to work in global markets. The programme was launched in collaboration with European School of Management (ESCP-EAP), France. The unique dual degree programme is delivered partly in India (MDI) and partly in Europe (ESCP-EAP campuses). The first phase of the programme is delivered on MDI Campus, at Gurgaon. The second phase of the programme is delivered in Europe at the London, Paris & Turin campuses (English Track).

In Europe, students will not only get classroom learning opportunity, they will also get an opportunity to work there or in India on a paid internship basis. In addition, there will be scope to get placement in Europe. Living and working in Europe will enable students to understand and appreciate other cultures, hone their capabilities to work across cultures and develop global mindsets.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering started functioning in the year 1983 with a sanctioned strength of thirty students for its undergraduate program (BE Computer Science). Now the department is recognized as one of the leading departments in the Eastern region of our country with infrastructure and facilities to match the very best in the country.

The department remains committed towards its goal of producing not only industry ready professionals , but also to provide the right ambience and infrastructure for those interested in pursuing their interest in Computers and related fields.

The department has a chequered past ;in the first phase the computer laboratory was equipped with the only a PDP mini computer – 11/37 (Digital Electronics Ltd.) with eight terminals. The above machines worked under the notable operating system i.e. RSX – 11M supporting programming languages like FORTRAN – IV, FORTRAN 77,ANSI COBOL, PASCAL and BASIC. Its worth mentioning that just after the installation of the above machine people not only form this Institute but also from the nearby well established industries like MECON, R & D SAIL, CMPDIL benefited tremendously using this machine to complete their outstanding projects and activities.

In the second phase soon after, the laboratory was expanded with another mini system, namely VAX 5100(DEC Ltd.) supporting 32 terminals and ULTRIX as the operating system. In 1984 the department introduced another program namely Master of Computer Applications (MCA) with a sanctioned strength of 30 students with the approval of the Department of Electronics, Govt. of India during the year 1984-85. At the same time the laboratories was enriched with the introduction of more advanced softwares like C, C++ and the RDBMS Ingress. Subsequently, some more advanced systems namely Macro VAX II (DEC Ltd.) and the mainframe server TATA UNISYS U-6000 with 45 terminals (VT 100 & GR 88) along with the operating system AT & T Unix supporting the RDBMS Oracle were installed in the 1991.

In the year 1999, the Ministry of HRD in collaboration with CDAC, gifted the Department a super computer PARAM 10000, as an acknowledgment of the Department’s untiring quest for excellence. The supercomputer holds a place of pride in the department’s impressive hardware set-up, lending its support to numerous departmental and inter departmental research activities. This was followed by a massive up gradation of the departmental infrastructure in an effort to keep pace with the rapidly changing needs of the industry. New laboratories (for Networking, Multimedia, Simulation etc.) were set up, cutting edge technology, hardware and software were acquired and the department made forays into the field of applied research, and major socio-economic projects like “Content Development for IT Localization (COIL Net)” and “Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI)”.

Never the one to sit back on its laurels, the department has been untiring in its search for educational excellence. A competent and highly educated faculty, many of whom are involved in research activities (in the fields of Software Engineering, RDBMS, Fuzzy Logic etc) are involved in satisfying the students constant curiosity. The department has organized in the recent past numerous Seminars, STTPs and Conferences to provide everyone an opportunity to interact with the best in the country. New programs at the PG and UG levels (M.Tech, ME, BE IT) have been started to meet the ever growing demand of quality education in the field of computer science . Course Design:
B.B.M. program has been designed to ensure that students acquire a good grasp of the major disciplines underpinning general management. Along with learning of specific theories and concepts through lectures, other teaching methods such as case studies, simulated games, group discussions, group projects, seminars and other contemporary techniques are used. History: - It is an optional major subject offers in the big challenges of becoming the chroniclers of major events in the time and space deriving inspirations and lessons for the future. The department of Computer Science & Engg. is headed by Dr. Srinivasan .R having more then 47 years of experience. The department is committed to continuously improve the quality of education by enhancing the knowledge of students & staff. The department has highly qualified staff & well equipped centralized computer laboratories with latest configurations & software tools.

According to BITES Survey in the year 2003 the department of ISE & CSE are rated number ONE among the colleges started in & after 2000.

Various technical seminars are arranged under two Students' Technical Forums namely 'SPOORTHI' & 'SRUJANA'. Various seminars and paper presentations are being done by staff & students The department has 180 computers.

An Intensive course on Java was held on 2nd March - 12th March 2006 for VI semester CS and IS students which was conducted by Mr. C.R Srinivasan, Vice President, mformation Technologies Inc., assisted by teaching staff from CS and IS department.

Workshop on Java, J2EE, EJB and Middleware for faculties of engineering colleges was conducted from March 2^nd to 4^th 2006 in collaboration with SUN Micro Systems, Bangalore. 30 Participants from various Engineering colleges attended this program.

College is represented regularly in the program organized by Microsoft, SUN, and IBM through student participation.

The department of Electrical Engineering (presently called Electrical and Electronics Engineering) was started along with the inception of the institution in the year 1946.Over the years development of new technology saw the department expand , leading to installation of new laboratories and revised scheme of study in areas of Analog Electronics , Power Electronics , Digital Electronics and Computer Applications. The department is government aided ,affiliated toVisvesvaraya Technological University , supports a post graduate program in Power Electronics , is accreditated by the National Board of Accreditation and is recognized as a Research Center by VTU. A center of excellence in the area of Power Engineering has been proposed , under on going Technical Education Quality Improvement Program(TEQIP) sponsored by MHRD .The department has initiated a process of modernization and has acquired sophisticated DSP controlled equipment and software with a focus on future thrust areas of research by faculty members and others in power electronic drives , power quality and power supplies. There has also been endeavors in the Industry/Institute interaction through training programs/project work by students belonging to under graduate and post graduate courses.

Mechanical Engineering department was started in 1946 under UG progrmme and is Grant in Aid. Since its inception more than Five thousand students have passed out of the portals of the department. As on date 12 professors have served as Head of the department. In 1973 Evening Engineering College was started exclusively for the working Diploma students who make use of the same infrastructure of the department with a separate faculty to train the students. In 1983 PG programme in Machine Design funded by AICTE was started. The department has been recognized as R & D centre by VTU. The department has been actively conducting National Level conference in the campus and has attracted researchers all over the country. The department runs Part time M.Tech (Product Design & Manufacturing) course run by VTU. The department has MEA programme which takes care of the extra curricular & co-curricular activities of the department. Students guided by the faculty conduct various Annual programmes. Alumni of the department have occupied very important positions in reputed Industries, Educational Institutions and R&D organizations.

The Civil Engineering Department was established in the year 1946 offering B.E. in Civil Engineering. Since then, more than 2000 civil engineers have graduated and are serving the society world wide. Over the years, department of civil engineering has acquired state of the art facilities and boasts of a highly qualified faculty. In a total of 14 full time faculty members, 7 faculty members have acquired Ph.D from premier institutions such as IISc, Bangalore, IIT Delhi and IIT Chennai and another 6 faculty members are on the verge of completion of their doctoral programme from IISc, Bangalore and Visvesvaraya Technological University. The B.E.(Civil) programme is NBA accredited for 5 years.

The Department of Civil Engineering is also offering Masters programme in Construction Technology since 1983, Environmental Engineering since 1996 and Transport Systems and Management since 2006. It is a recognised research centre of Visvesvaraya Technological University since 2002 and since then more than 15 students have registered for their doctoral programmes.

The Civil Engineering Department is actively involved in offering consultancy and research. The current research area’s include, earthquake resistant masonry structures, self compacting concrete, geopolymer concrete, construction productivity, soil stabilisation, soil dynamics, water quality, fracture mechanics of concrete, irrigation management, and environmental geotechnical.
